The Spa has some exciting conferences for 2011

Thousands of delegates are set to visit Scarborough Spa for a variety of conferences that will be held at the revamped venue later this year.

If you’re self catering in Scarborough you may be visiting for one of the large conferences held at the Spa. Most notably UKIP@s annual conference will be held there over two days in March.

Members will also be addressed by party officials and special guests speakers, including the party’s leader Nigel Farage.

Godfrey Bloom, UKIP MEP for Yorkshire and North Lincoinshire said.

‘ UKIP has a massive level of support in Yorkshire , and even though it will be a long way to travel for many of our supporters, it will no doubt be worth making the trip.’

‘ It’s around 10 years since Scarborough last held the event and we are delighted to be coming back to the area.’

The Spa team has also held talks with other party organisers about securing some of the regional conferences.

Councillor Janet Jefferson , cabinet portfolio holder for tourism and culture said.

‘ The conference trade booked at the Spa so far this year works out at almost 60,000 visits to Scarborough.’

‘ This is a sizeable figure and the additional economic benefits to the town and the wider area will be substantial.’

‘ Conference delegates will be spending money in the hotels, bed and breakfast establishments, restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and some will be self catering in Scarborough.

‘ The conference will undoubtedly boost the local economy and keep local people in jobs.’

‘ I know  the conference team at the Spa has been working extremely hard to bring in new business and encourage old clients to return.’

Coastival has unveiled it's first project of 2011

If you are self catering in Scarborough in February you may want to check out a unique sound sculpture made at Woodend Creative Workspace , the first Coastival project of 2011.

The sculpture made out of recycled objects , is being created by people from the Eastfield based Adult and Community Services Training Centre with artist Amy Hield and musician Paul Kearny for the arts festival, which will take place on February 18-20.

Once complete it will be both a piece of art and a musical instrument to be displayed at Scarborough railway station the week before and on Coastival weekend.

The Eastfield centre works with people with mental health problems and learning disabilities and Coastival organisers are delighted at their involvement.

Coastival organiser Wendy Clews said.

‘ In all, 60 people from the training centre will take part in the workshops and gain a great deal from creating something that is very special and totally unique for Coastival. We are really grateful to the training centre for getting involved in this way.’

Coastival 2011 promises to be an action packed weekend in Scarborough. Staged in February it includes top acts such as iconic rock band the Levellers and comedy from well known comedian Count Arthur Strong.

In terms of a great main course there’s plenty on offer including Balti dishes, Fish Specials Tikka Masala’s and Tandoori Specials. My tip would be if you’re not a big spice lover try the Chicken Tikka Masala, it’s the mild but tastes great it’s thick and creamy. If you’re into a bit more spice or want to try something different why not try the Special Murgh Masala a mince dish with a thick sauce of tomato’s it’s beautiful and authentic Indian.

There’s the usual sides to go with you’re curry such as Pilau rice or chips and a great selection nan breads , deserts wise there’s a nice selection of ice creams however most people are too full by then due to the great portions.

Scarborough Tandoori is definitely a perfect restaurant if you’re in Scarborough self catering , it’ll fill the family up and it’s reasonably priced.

Florio’s an Italian restaurant located on Aberdeen Walk Scarborough , first opened for business in 1986 and since then has become a household name amongst Scarborough locals.

Synch Pop masters Erasure will be playing Dalby Forest

If you’re self catering in Scarborough this summer you may want to jump in the car and re-live a bit of 80′s /90′s pop nostalgia.

Erasure have been confirmed as the second headliner for June’s concert in Dalby Forest.

The band haven’t performed or recorded in four years and have just announced their Total Pop ! tour – a series of dates for summer 2011 playing their hits as part of a Forestry Commission Live Music Events.

Erasure’s Andy Bell said.

‘ This wonderful opportunity to perform for the fans in such a unique backdrop feels like just the right way to jump back into Erasure after a four year break. ‘

‘We’re excited to be playing in the woods and really hope it doesn’t rain.’

The Dalby gig near Pickering will take place on June 25th and they will also play a total of seven dates across the country.

The tour coincides with the release of their new album .

Erasure formed 25 years ago and the award winning duo released a succession of both influential and chart topping pop anthems of the 1980′s and 1990′s including Sometimes, Victim of Love, Ships of Fools, Savannah, Star and Who Needs Love (Like That).

Scottish Rockers Simple Minds Are Headlining Dalby Forest in Summer 2011

Scottish rockers Simple Minds are the first band confirmed for next summer’s concerts at Dalby Forest meaning if you’re self catering in Scarborough next summer you might want to book a ticket quickly for a great event.

The band will perform at picturesque 5,000 capacity venue on Friday June 24th following in the footsteps of Paul Weller, Status Quo, Embrace, Travis, McFly and the Zutons.

Best known for songs Alive and Kicking , Sanctify Yourself and Don’t You ( Forget about me) Simple Minds releases their greatest hits album in Spring and will be supported by Starsailor frontman James Walsh.

Paul Cody from the Forestry Commission said.

‘ This summer’s two concerts were sell outs and we predict another year of strong demand for tickets. Dalby has emerged as one of the great venues for music in Northern England. As we endure the ice and snow we can look forward to a great midsummer nights music in the North Yorkshire Moor’s.’

Simple Minds Singer Jim Kerr said.

‘ We’ve never done the forest gigs before so we are really looking forward to performing in such beautiful places.’

Tickets go on sale Friday. Money generated by forestry commission Live Music Ticket Sales is spent directly on the nation’s woodlands benefiting the area’s butterflies to the popular mountain bike trails.

Last year saw Mick Hucknall perform with Simply Red and Keane grace the stage over two nights.

The organisers will be announcing their second headline act next week for all those self catering in Scarborough next summer we will keep you posted on the next big act to grace the woodland stage.

Work began in January with the Scarborough council securing a £4 million investment from Yorkshire Forward to regenerate Scarborough’s iconic Spa, the council have been working on a budget of £6.27 million.

The work includes adaptations of the stage and auditorium seating in the Grand Hall to create a more flexible conference and entertainment venue, as well as new dressing rooms for up to 50 people, upgrading the bar, restaurant area, a new reception area, new management offices and better access for customers.

Councillor Derek Bastimen , Cabinet Member for regeneration and strategic planning said.

‘ The development will bring huge economic benefits to Scarborough and the wider borough and really put Scarborough Spa on the national map.’

A flock of birds could be the explanation for the latest UFO sighting in Scarborough

If you’ve been self catering in Scarborough over the last couple of weeks you may have noticed that their was a UFO sighting on the outskirts of the town last week.

The footage was filmed over Osgodby and has swept the Internet the footage has appeared on websites as far afield as Thailand and Vietnam as well as national newspaper’s such as ‘The Sun.’

But 47 year old Russ Kellett, a Filey based UFO investigator, said that it was likely to have been a flock of starlings- collectively known as a murmation.

He said.

‘ I’ve seen this strange object before, in the sky two or three years ago and i followed it. It was going towards Bempton so i got out of the car to have a look.’

‘ This old lad said “it’s only birds lad”. It came around and you could see they were birds. It happens at this time of year. It looks like when you put iron fillings onto a piece of paper and put a magnet  underneath it, you get the same effect.’

Since the Osgodby footage appeared on The Sun’s website on Tuesday it has been copied on UFO and news websites across the globe.

‘ It really looks like a flying saucer. Crowds of people saw it. There’s definitely something happening here. My son-in-law filmed it  for several minutes. There appeared to be two objects, one with a hooked tail, the other disc-shaped.’

Only twenty minutes from Scarborough thousands of goths will be descending on the town for a Halloween to remember.

Amongst the thousands will be no other than BBC programme The One Show with hosts Jason Manford and Alex Jones descending upon the town over the town to cover the festival.

The crew will be filming the events that take place and four lucky locals will be getting a makeover in the Little Angel Pub in Flowergate.

There is an expectedly high turn out and bands such as Autumn Cannibals and Manuskript will be playing as well as events such as a Gothic  bring and buy sale at Revolution with proceeds going to a Bat Conservation Trust.

Whitby Goth Weekend Official Organiser Jo Hampshire said.

‘ Tickets sales have been really popular and there has been a substantial increase in ticket sales compared to April.’

‘ We are expecting our usual influx of goth weekend customers.’

‘ Accordingly , people have been asking for somewhere to stay for about three months. A lot of goths are still looking for places to stay.’

‘ It’s going to be an absolutely packed weekend like it’s always been Halloween! .’
